ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Oakes Public Schools PTO has formed a sub-committee consisting of members Maureen Wentworth, Lacy Andersen and Trista Gemar. The purpose of this sub-committee is to organize fundraising efforts to raise $55,000 to Turf the Playground. If you have children that attend school or have visited the playground with your grandchildren, friends, etc., you have likely noticed the poor condition of the grassy area. In fact, it's almost non-existent. The surface is uneven, rock hard, muddy when it rains and all out an accident waiting to happen for anyone walking or running across the space. There have been minor injuries already sustained, such as sprained ankles, and so on.

You might be asking yourself, "Why don't they just plant grass?" Truth is, many attempts have been done to try to grow grass, however with the amount of foot traffic the playground sees, it's nearly impossible to establish and maintain a grassy area there.

As PTO members, we want all children to have a safe surface to play on. The playground is used all months out of the year, including summer months where school is not in session. The playground is in close proximity to downtown and many people bring their kids or grandkids here to play.
